Shine the light on spera fundraising

The Waterford Soccer Club has requested lights for Spera Field to enable the town soccer players the opportunity to safely practice and play soccer on an equitable basis with other town of Waterford Recreation & Park co- sponsored programs. The Waterford Soccer Club is gender equitable and would like the town to support our effort to level the playing field, particularly in light of the fact we have 600 registered players, 300 of whom are female.

Providing lights will allow for a safer practice environment. Starting in September, as we loose sunlight, coaches continue to push the practice envelope ending practices at dusk. During the month of October, teams conclude practice in darkness. Finally, unfortunately, due to the lack of facilities, some teams are forced to cancel practices altogether. As the sun sets on our soccer players, they leave the field with one hundred to four hundred percent less playing time in comparison to the other co-sponsored sports in the town of Waterford.

The Waterford Soccer Club has written an application for a special permit for lights approved by the twon. We have the support of Recreation and Parks and the Sports Youth Council and we are in the process of fundraising. We have held a public meeting announcing our plans. Our goal is to purchase six 70 foot concrete and steel poles with enough light fixtures to illuminate the entire complex. We have decided to go with Musco Sportslighting because they will help finance our project totaling $265,000 for a turn key installation price. The Waterford Soccer Club plans on raising $50,000 plus to help offset the total cost to the town. The town has given us $59,000 in '08 and now $55,000 for '09. We have raise $20,000 so far and will continue with our camps, Make Mine Wine Event, Soccerfest and hosting Tournaments. With the money from fundraising and the town we will be able to be install the lights this summer!

We would like to thank the Town of Waterford and all the people behind the scenes that guide the process of making this a wonderful place to raise your children. We would also like to thank all of the business for their donations and the people who have donated so far.

Gregg Swanson
